What is a Mentor in the SLC?
Mentors walk alongside two students from their church for six months. We welcome anyone from full time youth workers, adult volunteers, parents, to caring adults in a church community.
They don’t run the program.
They don’t have to be experts.
They simply:
- Intentionally connect with their trio
- Pray with students
- Ask thoughtful questions
- Encourage courage
What Does the Time Commitment Look Like?
The SLC runs from January – June each year.
You’ll participate by:
- Connecting with your trio (your two students)
- Meeting with your pod (your trio plus a few more)
- Joining an online session each month with everyone
- Attending one in-person gathering over a weekend
- Supporting students as they plan and run Alpha in their school
This is relational discipleship, not another ministry program.

How to Get Involved

What exactly does a mentor do in SLC?
Mentors walk alongside two Grade 10 students from their church throughout the six-months of SLC.
This typically includes:

You’re not responsible for running the program, you’re there to support students as they take steps forward.
How much time does SLC require?
Mentors will be committed to:

The role is designed to be sustainable alongside your existing commitments.
Do I need experience in youth ministry or leadership?
No. SLC isn’t looking for experts – it’s looking for consistent, trusted adults.
If you’re willing to show up, listen well, and encourage students, you’re already positioned to be a mentor.
What support will I receive?
You won’t be doing this alone.
SLC provides:

Guided content for your trio to follow, and monthly sessions with the entire SLC.

Your role is relational. We provide the framework and are with you every step.
What if the students don’t feel ready?
That’s very normal. Most students don’t feel fully ready when they begin.
SLC is designed for students who are willing, not students who already feel super confident.
Mentors play an important role in helping students take those first steps.
Do the two students need to know each other?
Ideally, yes – students are encouraged to apply with someone from the same school they attend.
That shared context helps them support one another as they grow in leadership.
